Summer of Love review: will you spare a little love for Urban Decay?

What it is: Urban Decay Summer of Love nail kit

The gist of things: The Summer of Love nail kit is available exclusively online, and will run you $28 for seven bottles of polish (0.17fl oz each.) For those of you even less math-inclined than I am, that’s $4 a bottle ;)

From l-r: Shine On, Woodstock, Love Light, Hashbry, Magic Bus, Aquarius, Psychedelic Sister.

All of the polishes are Big Three Free, aka free of toluene, formaldehyde, and DBP, and feature a  220-strand brush. Why that number is important, I haven’t the slightest clue — but I like it! It’s pretty standard as far as brushes go, but it’s not too thick, so the bristles splay out quite nicely on the nail. (I just hate it when brushes are thick; it makes it so hard to apply the colour.)
The shades:

Shine On – an absolutely gorgeous nutty metallic. Of all the shades, this one’s my favourite! One coat is enough to tint the nail beautifully, but three deliver just an amazing opaque shade.
Woodstock – a bright, bright pink! It’s not hard to get this cream finish completely opaque.
Love Light – my second favourite. Three or four layers produces a lovely, shimmering opacity, but it’s really just gorgeous with one or two layers (especially overtop a cream finish polish for some sparkle.)
Hashbry – a vivid violet with bold red fuchsia undertones.

Magic Bus – safety-pylon orange. I personally hate orange, so that’s all I’m going to say. It’s very, very vivid an opaque, though!
Aquarius – shimmery, turquoise… what else could a girl ask for? I feel like a lot of this season’s turquoises pull too yellow for me, but this is just perfect.
Psychedelic Sister – imagine if you created a creamy coral, but instead of mixing red and orange, you mixed hot pink and orange. Well, that’s what this is!

The verdict? If you’re looking for some awesome, opaque brights, this would be perfect for you! The Urban Decay polish formula is pretty solid, and the shades are just gorgeous. For someone who settles on one or two shades and wears them around forever, this is obviously not a great choice — but for those of you like myself, who can’t commit to any one colour and never finish off bottles of polish, this would be perfect!
P.S. Want darker, moodier hues? Check out the Urban Decay Apocalyptic nail kit. It’s on sale for $18 on the Urban Decay site, just click on the image above!
